Painehäviöiltä

Painehäviöiltä is a Finnish term that translates to "pressure loss" or "pressure drop" in English. It refers to a decrease in pressure within a fluid system, such as a pipe, duct, or other conduit. This phenomenon is common in fluid mechanics and can occur for various reasons.

One primary cause of pressure loss is friction between the fluid and the walls of the conduit. As the fluid flows, it exerts a shear force on the conduit's surface, and this resistance converts some of the fluid's kinetic energy into heat, resulting in a pressure reduction. The longer the conduit and the rougher its inner surface, the greater the frictional pressure loss.

Another significant factor contributing to pressure loss is turbulence. When fluid flow becomes turbulent, characterized by chaotic and irregular motion, more energy is dissipated compared to smooth, laminar flow. This increased energy dissipation manifests as a greater pressure drop. Turbulence can be induced by high flow rates, sharp bends, sudden expansions or contractions in the conduit, or the presence of obstacles.

Changes in the cross-sectional area of the conduit also lead to pressure losses. For example, when a fluid flows from a wider pipe to a narrower one, its velocity increases, and if the transition is abrupt, there can be a loss of pressure due to energy dissipation associated with the change in flow pattern. Similarly, flowing through fittings like valves, elbows, and tees introduces additional resistance and thus pressure loss.

Understanding and calculating pressure loss is crucial in the design and operation of many engineering systems, including water supply networks, HVAC systems, and industrial piping. It helps engineers determine appropriate pump sizes, pipe diameters, and overall system efficiency.
