Paineensäästöventtiilit, often translated as pressure-reducing valves or PRVs, are mechanical devices used to automatically reduce a higher-pressure inlet fluid to a stable, lower outlet pressure. They are essential components in many fluid systems, including water distribution networks, industrial processes, and building plumbing. The primary function of a PRV is to protect downstream equipment and fixtures from excessive pressure that could cause damage or malfunction. They also help conserve water and energy by maintaining a consistent and appropriate pressure level.

The operation of a typical PRV is based on a balance of forces. A diaphragm or piston inside the valve is acted upon by the downstream pressure. This force is opposed by a spring or a pilot control system. When the downstream pressure drops, the spring force overcomes the diaphragm force, opening the valve and allowing more fluid to flow through. Conversely, if the downstream pressure rises, the diaphragm force increases, pushing back against the spring and closing the valve to restrict flow. This self-regulating mechanism ensures that the outlet pressure remains relatively constant, regardless of fluctuations in the inlet pressure or changes in the downstream flow rate.

Direct-acting valves are simpler, with the spring directly acting on a disc or diaphragm. Proper selection and installation of a PRV are crucial for its effective performance and longevity.
