Pageantry refers to public events characterized by elaborate ceremonial displays, organized processions, distinctive costumes, music, and choreographed performances. It emphasizes visual spectacle and symbolic meaning, often tied to civic or cultural identity, rites of passage, or commemorations.

Elements commonly include parades or processions, uniforms or garments, ceremonial music, floats, tableaux, and coordinated movement. Pageantry can be organized by government bodies, religious groups, educational institutions, or cultural associations, and is frequently designed for broad audiences, sometimes for national television audiences.

Historically, pageantry has served to display authority, celebrate religious devotion, and foster communal identity. It appeared in royal courts, religious festivals, and public ceremonies, and evolved into contemporary forms such as state openings, national day celebrations, and large-scale cultural festivals. Modern mass media has expanded its reach and altered its presentation.

Types and contexts include ceremonial pageantry (state or religious rites), festival or cultural pageantry (carnivals and street parades), and sports or event pageantry (opening and closing ceremonies). Beauty pageants are sometimes described as pageants but constitute a distinct competitive format and may invite ethical debate.

Criticism centers on excess, inclusivity, objectification, nationalism, and commercialization. Proponents argue pageantry preserves tradition, fosters civic pride, and boosts tourism. The balance between cultural expression and social values remains variable across regions and events.
