Padmavati, also known as Padmini, is a legendary queen mentioned in the epic poem Padmavat written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540. The poem narrates the story of Alauddin Khilji, the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, who became obsessed with Padmavati after hearing of her beauty. Khilji attacked the Chittor Fort, ruled by Padmavati's husband, Rana Ratan Singh, with the sole intention of capturing her.

According to Jayasi's poem, Padmavati, a princess of the Chola kingdom, married Rana Ratan Singh of Chittor. Alauddin Khilji, upon learning of her unparalleled beauty, laid siege to Chittor. After a prolonged battle, when it became clear that the fort would fall and the women would be captured, Padmavati, along with other Rajput women, performed the jauhar, a ritualistic self-immolation, to preserve their honor. Rana Ratan Singh and his warriors fought valiantly and died defending the fort.

The historical accuracy of Padmavati's existence and the events described in the Padmavat poem are widely debated among historians. Many scholars believe that Padmavati is a fictional character and the poem is a work of romantic literature rather than a historical account. However, the legend of Padmavati has become a significant part of Rajput folklore and is celebrated as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and defiance against foreign invaders. The story has been retold and adapted in various forms, including films and theatrical productions, further cementing its place in Indian cultural narratives.
