Paddington Errors, often referred to as PaddingFehlern in German, are a type of error that can occur in network communications, particularly in the context of secure protocols like TLS/SSL. These errors arise when the padding applied to data before encryption is invalid or corrupted. Padding is used to ensure that the encrypted data block meets a specific size requirement, making it harder for attackers to infer information about the plaintext. When the receiving party decrypts the data, it also decrypts the padding and checks its integrity. If the padding is found to be incorrect, a Paddington Error is triggered.

The implications of a Paddington Error can vary. In some cases, it might simply result in a dropped connection or a failure to decrypt the message, which can be a minor inconvenience. However, in certain scenarios, particularly with older or improperly implemented cryptographic systems, Paddington Errors have been exploited by attackers. These exploits, known as padding oracle attacks, allow an attacker to gradually decrypt ciphertext without possessing the decryption key. By observing which padding attempts result in an error and which do not, the attacker can deduce information about the original plaintext. Modern secure protocols and implementations have largely mitigated the risks associated with padding oracle attacks through various countermeasures, such as constant-time decryption and avoiding direct error messages that reveal padding validity. Therefore, while the concept of Paddington Errors remains relevant to understanding cryptographic security, the practical risk has significantly diminished in well-maintained systems.
