Padangtegal

Padangtegal is a village located in the Ubud district of Bali, Indonesia. It is one of the four traditional villages that comprise Ubud, alongside Nyuh Kuning, Mas, and Peliatan. The village is renowned for its cultural significance, particularly its association with the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, which is a major tourist attraction.

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, also known as the Mandala Suci Wenara Wana, is a protected forest that is home to hundreds of long-tailed macaques. The forest is considered a sacred place by the local community and is managed by the Padangtegal Village authority. Within the sanctuary, visitors can find several ancient temples, including the Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal, Pura Beji, and Pura Prajapati. These temples are actively used for religious ceremonies by the villagers.

The economy of Padangtegal is largely dependent on tourism, with many residents working in the hospitality industry, art galleries, and souvenir shops. The village also maintains traditional Balinese agricultural practices, with rice paddies still visible in the surrounding areas. Padangtegal is known for its community-based management of cultural heritage, with the village holding significant control over the administration and preservation of the Monkey Forest and its temples.
