Paclite

Paclite is a lightweight waterproof breathable fabric technology developed by W. L. Gore & Associates for use in outdoor outerwear. It is marketed as a low-weight, highly packable option within the Gore-Tex family, designed for activities where minimal bulk and volume are priorities, such as hiking and travel rainwear.

Construction and performance: Paclite typically uses a Gore-Tex membrane bonded to a lightweight outer shell fabric in a two-layer laminate. The design emphasizes packability, allowing a garment to be compressed into a small space. The lining is often a lightweight, built-in layer rather than a separate liner, reducing bulk. The membrane provides waterproofness against external moisture and, with a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish on the outer fabric, helps water bead and roll off. Breathability is maintained by the microporous membrane, enabling water vapor to escape during activity. The fabric is generally lighter than other Gore-Tex laminates, trading some durability and robustness for lower weight.

Applications and care: Paclite is used in rain jackets and shells, windbreakers, and other rainwear, typically when packability and weight are critical. Proper care, including washing with mild detergent, avoiding fabric softeners, reapplying DWR as needed, and air-drying, helps maintain waterproof performance.

Limitations: Compared with heavier Gore-Tex laminates, Paclite fabrics may be less durable, less comfortable during high-output activities, and have a shorter lifespan under frequent abrasion or exposure to harsh conditions.
