Packingafdichtingen

Packingafdichtingen, often referred to as gland packings or stuffing box packings, are mechanical seals used to prevent leakage along a rotating or reciprocating shaft. They are typically installed in a stuffing box, a cavity surrounding the shaft. The packing material is compressed by a follower gland, creating a seal against the shaft and the stuffing box walls. This compression forces the packing material to deform and fill any gaps, thus blocking the passage of fluid.

The primary function of packingafdichtingen is to contain fluids, such as water, oil, or steam, within a system while allowing the shaft to move freely. They are commonly found in pumps, valves, mixers, and other rotating equipment where a dynamic seal is required. The choice of packing material depends on factors such as the fluid being sealed, temperature, pressure, and shaft speed. Common materials include graphite, PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), aramid fibers, and various natural or synthetic fibers impregnated with lubricants or other chemical treatments.

Proper installation and adjustment are crucial for the effective performance of packingafdichtingen. Over-tightening can lead to excessive friction, shaft damage, and premature wear of both the packing and the shaft. Conversely, under-tightening will result in leakage. A slight controlled leakage is often acceptable and even beneficial for lubrication and cooling of the packing and shaft. Maintenance involves periodic checking of tightness and replacement when the packing shows signs of wear or leakage exceeds acceptable limits.
