PVCskum

PVCskum, commonly referred to as PVC foam board or expanded PVC (EPVC), is a lightweight, rigid sheet material made from polyvinyl chloride that contains a closed-cell foam core. It is produced in a range of densities and thicknesses and is widely used for signs, displays, and model making due to its combination of strength and light weight.

The material is moisture resistant and dimensionally stable because of its closed-cell structure. It accepts paints, inks, and vinyl graphics well and can be machined with standard tools, including laser cutters and routers, though laser processing can release chlorine-containing fumes and requires proper ventilation. Surface finishes include paints, laminates, and vinyl wraps. PVCskum is available in various colors, with white being the most common foundation for graphic work.

Manufacturing process: polymer resin is mixed with a blowing agent and extruded to form a foam sheet, creating a cellular core with a closed-cell structure. The sheets are produced in a range of thicknesses and then cut or machined to final sizes. The surfaces are typically smooth on both faces and provide good screw-holding for light fixtures and signage anchors. Graphics and laminates are commonly applied with solvents, adhesives, or laminating laminates.

Applications: signage, point-of-purchase displays, interior architecture models, temporary exhibits, and crafts. It serves as a versatile substrate for painted lettering, 3D lettering, and light-duty structural components in non-load-bearing contexts. It can be thermoformed at moderate temperatures for curved components.

Environmental and safety notes: PVCskum is not biodegradable and recycling depends on local facilities; it may be recycled where available. Burning or incineration releases toxic gases, and machining dust should be controlled. Users should select appropriate grades for outdoor or UV exposure and consider weather resistance requirements.
