PTFE is a fluoropolymer noted for chemical resistance, low friction, and broad temperature tolerance, and is widely used across industries.

Common forms include PTFE-filled polymers (such as bronze or graphite composites), PTFE-reinforced composites, paste- or film-coated components, and PTFE membranes or coatings applied to metal, ceramic, or plastic substrates.

Key properties: excellent chemical inertness; service temperatures typically up to 260°C; low coefficient of friction; non-stick behavior; good electrical insulation; low surface energy; stability over wide pH ranges.

Applications: seals, gaskets, bearings, pump and valve components; corrosion-resistant linings; non-stick coatings for cookware; chemical-processing equipment; PTFE-containing membranes for filtration; aerospace and automotive components.

Limitations and processing: PTFE is difficult to bond to other materials; machining requires special tooling; reinforced grades address wear but may alter dimensional stability; high friction surfaces benefit from fillers; processing temperatures above about 260°C can cause decomposition; requires controlled manufacturing.

Safety and environmental: PTFE decomposition at high temperatures releases fumes that can be hazardous; avoid overheating; ensure adequate ventilation; recycling is challenging; modern production has reduced use of perfluorinated processing aids; check regulatory compliance for specific applications.
