PONsystems refers to Passive Optical Network systems. These are fiber optic communication networks that use a point-to-multipoint architecture. In a PON, a single optical fiber from the provider's central office is split into multiple fibers that serve individual customers. The "passive" aspect means that there are no active electronic components between the central office and the end-user, such as amplifiers or repeaters. Instead, passive optical splitters are used to divide the optical signal.
