PMOLEDnäytöt, or Passive-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode displays, represent a type of OLED display technology. Unlike their Active-Matrix (AMOLED) counterparts, PMOLEDs utilize a simpler driving mechanism. In a PMOLED, each pixel is controlled by a set of row and column electrodes. A current is applied to a specific pixel by activating its corresponding row and column. This basic structure makes PMOLEDs less complex to manufacture and therefore often more cost-effective for smaller displays.

The primary advantage of PMOLED technology lies in its simplicity and lower production costs. This makes them well-suited for applications where high resolution or rapid refresh rates are not critical. Common uses include small monochrome displays found in devices like MP3 players, calculators, remote controls, and simple status indicators on appliances. They are also employed in some wearables and automotive displays for basic information readouts.

However, the passive matrix design also imposes limitations. PMOLEDs are generally less efficient than AMOLEDs, meaning they consume more power for a given brightness level. Furthermore, as the number of pixels increases, the complexity of the driving circuitry grows, leading to voltage drops across the display and a reduction in brightness and uniformity. This inherent limitation restricts PMOLEDs to smaller screen sizes. While they offer vibrant colors and excellent contrast inherent to OLED technology, their pixel addressing method makes them less suitable for high-definition video or demanding graphics.
