PLCjärjestelmiä refers to Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems. These are industrial digital computers that have been ruggedized to withstand the rigors of an industrial environment. They are used for automating electromechanical processes, such as control of machinery on factory assembly lines, amusement rides, or lighting fixtures. A PLC is a specialized computer designed for industrial control applications. It monitors inputs from sensors, performs logic operations based on a user-programmed application, and controls outputs to actuators such as motors, valves, and lights.

PLC systems are comprised of several key components. The central processing unit (CPU) is the brain of the PLC, executing the control program. Input modules receive signals from sensors and switches, converting them into a format the CPU can understand. Output modules send control signals from the CPU to actuators. The power supply provides the necessary electricity for the PLC to operate. Communication interfaces allow the PLC to interact with other devices, such as human-machine interfaces (HMIs), other PLCs, or supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.

The programming of PLCs is typically done using specialized software, with languages like ladder logic, structured text, function block diagram, and sequential function chart being common. Ladder logic is particularly popular due to its resemblance to electrical relay logic diagrams, making it familiar to many industrial electricians. PLC systems offer significant advantages over traditional hardwired relay control systems, including flexibility, scalability, ease of troubleshooting, and cost-effectiveness for complex control tasks. They are fundamental to modern industrial automation, enabling efficient and reliable operation of diverse manufacturing and process systems.
