PICmelun

PICmelun is a multidisciplinary research institute located in Melun, a suburb of Paris, France. Established in 2012, the institute was created to advance research in computational science, data analytics, and applied mathematics in collaboration with the University of Paris-Saclay and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). PICmelun’s primary objective is to develop innovative computational methods that can be applied across a wide range of scientific domains, including climate modeling, biomedical engineering, and materials science.

The institute is organized into three main research groups: Numerical Analysis, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, and High-Performance Computing. Each group focuses on both theoretical foundations and practical implementations, often collaborating on joint projects. A notable achievement of PICmelun was the development of a distributed simulation framework that significantly reduced the computational time required for climate projections, enabling the inclusion of higher resolution atmospheric models.

PICmelun also serves as a training hub for graduate students, offering PhD and postdoctoral fellowships. In partnership with industry, the institute operates a technology transfer office that facilitates the commercialization of research outcomes, leading to several spin-off companies in the data analytics sector. The institute maintains an open-access publication policy and regularly hosts workshops and conferences that attract researchers from Europe and North America.

Through its combination of rigorous research, training, and industry collaboration, PICmelun has positioned itself as a leading center for computational science in France, contributing to both national scientific priorities and global knowledge exchange.
