PGMFI

PGMFI stands for Programmable Fuel Injection. It refers to a type of electronic fuel injection system that allows for precise control over the amount of fuel delivered to an engine. Unlike simpler, older injection systems, PGMFI systems can be reprogrammed or "tuned" to optimize engine performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions. This is typically achieved through a reflash of the engine control unit (ECU) or by installing a new, custom-programmed ECU.

The core of a PGMFI system is the ECU, which receives data from various sensors measuring engine conditions such as engine speed, throttle position, air temperature, and oxygen levels in the exhaust. Based on this data and its pre-programmed maps, the ECU calculates the optimal amount of fuel to inject and the precise timing for injection. The "programmable" aspect means that these maps, which dictate the fuel delivery strategy, can be altered.

This adjustability makes PGMFI popular in performance tuning. Enthusiasts and tuners can modify engine components like exhaust systems or intake manifolds and then reprogram the ECU to take full advantage of these hardware changes. This can lead to increased horsepower and torque. Furthermore, PGMFI systems can be adapted to meet specific driving conditions or regulations, offering a flexible solution for engine management.
