PDCA cycle is a four-step management method used in business for the control of processes, products, and services. The acronym PDCA stands for Plan-Do-Check-Act. This model is also known as the Deming cycle or the Shewhart cycle.

The Plan stage involves identifying a problem or opportunity for improvement, analyzing the current situation, and developing a plan to make a change. This stage focuses on defining objectives and outlining the steps needed to achieve them.

The Do stage is where the plan is put into action. This typically involves implementing the planned changes on a small scale or in a pilot program. Data is collected during this phase to evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented changes.

The Check stage, also known as Study, involves analyzing the data collected during the Do stage. The results are compared against the expected outcomes. This step is crucial for understanding whether the implemented changes have had the desired impact and for identifying any unintended consequences.

The Act stage, also known as Adjust, is when the findings from the Check stage are used to make improvements. If the changes were successful, they are standardized and implemented more broadly. If the changes were not effective, the process is repeated from the Plan stage, incorporating lessons learned. The PDCA cycle is a continuous improvement tool, emphasizing that quality management is an ongoing process rather than a one-time event.
