Päätöksentekotieteet, or decision science, is an interdisciplinary field that studies how individuals, groups, and organizations make choices. The core aim is to develop theories and models that explain and predict decision behavior, as well as to improve the quality of decisions made in complex situations.

Key areas within decision science include the study of heuristics and biases, which are mental shortcuts and systematic errors that can affect judgment. Prospect theory, for instance, describes how people choose between probabilistic alternatives that involve risk, where their choices are influenced by potential gains and losses. Behavioral economics is another significant branch, exploring how psychological factors deviate from traditional economic assumptions of rational choice. Research also focuses on decision analysis, a methodology for structuring and analyzing complex decisions, often involving the use of decision trees and utility functions.

Applications of decision science are widespread.
