Oyjn

Oyjn is a fictional city-state and maritime republic created for speculative fiction and world-building projects. In its canonical setting, Oyjn sits on a protected coastline at the mouth of the Zephyr Sea, comprising a dense urban core and several outer harbors connected by wooden causeways.

The city centers on the Old Quarter, the High Bastion, and the East Docks, with several outer islands linked by causeways. The Harbor Chain forms its maritime boundary; climate is temperate with fog and predictable winds favorable to ships.

Oyjn was founded by rival guilds in the 12th century and evolved into a mercantile republic. It expanded through shipbuilding and spice trade, and later institutionalized governance to manage trade routes and port security.

The polity is governed by the Council of Guilds, a rotating assembly that appoints a First Magistrate for a five-year term. The council handles foreign affairs and trade, while the magistrate oversees civil administration and public works.

The economy centers on shipbuilding, fishing, and maritime trade. The port facilities include natural harbors and a modern quay complex. Efforts are made to counter piracy and to maintain sea lanes.

Oyjn hosts diverse communities, with Oyjnic as the traditional language and a calque script used in official inscriptions. The cuisine blends seafood, kelp, and grain, while festivals celebrate sea legends and guild heritage.
