Overskuddslakk

Overskuddslakk is a term used in Norwegian industry to describe lacquer that remains after a coating operation and would otherwise be discarded. It refers to surplus material from batches, partially used containers, or mixed colors that do not yet meet final specifications. In practice, overskuddslakk can be reused for touch-up work, small repairs, or to prepare new batches, provided proper color control, viscosity checks, and safety measures are followed.

Etymology and context: The word combines overskudd (surplus) and lakk (lacquer). It is primarily encountered in Norwegian-speaking manufacturing and maintenance sectors, such as automotive refinishing, shipyards, furniture production, and general coating operations. Because policies vary by company and sector, the exact definition and handling of overskuddslakk are not standardized, and practices range from strict reuse programs to disposal as waste when quality cannot be assured.

Handling and safety: Effective management involves labeling, proper sealing of containers, and storage in conditions suitable for paints and solvents (cool, dry, away from ignition sources). Lot tracking, color matching, and viscosity or drying-time testing are commonly required before reuse to ensure product performance and avoid cross-contamination. When reuse is not feasible, overskuddslakk is handled according to local environmental and hazardous-waste regulations.
