Overmystifying

Overmystifying is a cognitive bias or rhetorical technique where something is made unnecessarily complex or obscure. This can involve using jargon, elaborate metaphors, or convoluted reasoning to create an impression of profound insight or hidden meaning where little or none exists. It often serves to mask a lack of understanding, to inflate one's own perceived intelligence, or to deliberately confuse an audience.

The act of overmystifying can be unintentional, stemming from an individual's genuine difficulty in explaining a concept simply or their tendency to think in overly abstract terms. However, it can also be a conscious strategy. In certain social or professional contexts, making a subject appear more difficult than it is can grant the overmystifier authority or make them seem indispensable. This can be seen in academic circles where complex language might be used to signal expertise, or in marketing where the workings of a product are deliberately obscured to appear more advanced.

Overmystifying can hinder clear communication and learning. When information is unnecessarily complicated, it becomes harder for others to grasp, evaluate, or contribute to the subject matter. It can create barriers to entry for newcomers and foster an environment where superficial understanding is mistaken for deep knowledge. Recognizing overmystification is the first step in cutting through the obscurity and seeking clarity.
