Overføringseffekten

Overføringseffekten, also known as the transference effect, is a concept in psychology that describes the unconscious redirection of feelings from one person to another. It is a core component of psychodynamic theory, particularly associated with Sigmund Freud's work.

This phenomenon occurs when a person, consciously or unconsciously, applies feelings, attitudes, or expectations from a significant past relationship onto someone in their present life. Often, the recipient of these redirected feelings is a therapist or counselor, but it can also happen in everyday interactions with friends, family, or colleagues. The individual might perceive the current person as embodying certain traits or fulfilling roles previously held by someone from their past, leading to a disproportionate emotional response.

The transference effect can be positive or negative. Positive transference might involve feelings of affection, admiration, or trust being projected onto the new person. Negative transference, conversely, can manifest as feelings of anger, distrust, or resentment. Understanding transference is considered crucial in psychotherapy, as it provides valuable insights into a patient's past relationships and their current emotional patterns. By analyzing these projections, therapists can help patients address unresolved conflicts and develop healthier interpersonal dynamics. It is important to distinguish transference from a genuine assessment of the present person's character, as it is rooted in past experiences rather than current reality.
