Overflatemateriale

Overflatemateriale is the uppermost layer of material that covers the Earth’s surface, and it includes both natural substances and human-made surface deposits. Natural overflatemateriale consists of soils, peat, weathered rock (regolith), and unconsolidated sediments such as sand, silt, and clay. It can vary greatly in thickness from location to location and is influenced by climate, vegetation, and geological history. Anthropogenic overflatemateriale refers to surface layers created or modified by human activity, such as construction fills, asphalt and concrete pavements, landscaping soils, and other debris.

Natural overflatemateriale is formed through processes like weathering, deposition, soil formation, and organic accumulation. It is commonly classified by properties such as grain size distribution, organic content, moisture, density, and horizon structure. The term often overlaps with soil science, where topsoil and subsoil are part of the overflatemateriale in a soil profile.
