Outcoupling

Outcoupling is the process of transferring energy or particles from a confined system into external modes or channels. In optics and photonics, it refers to extracting light that is confined in a resonator, cavity, or waveguide so that it can propagate into free space or another optical medium.

In laser and cavity physics, outcoupling is governed by the output coupler or coupling mechanism that couples the intracavity field to an external mode. This is typically realized with a partially transmitting mirror, a grating coupler, or a bus waveguide. The rate at which light leaves the cavity (the external coupling rate) competes with intrinsic losses; together they determine the cavity’s total loss rate and the threshold and efficiency of lasing. There is often a trade-off between high quality factor (Q) and efficient outcoupling; at critical coupling, the external and internal loss rates are matched to maximize the power escaping into the external channel.

In integrated photonics, outcoupling methods include evanescent coupling to adjacent waveguides, grating couplers, edge coupling, and adiabatic tapers. Efficient outcoupling requires mode matching, impedance matching, and minimizing back-reflections, as well as careful control of fabrication tolerances.

In atomic and quantum gas experiments, outcoupling can describe releasing particles from a trap or condensate to form an atomic beam, often via magnetic, radiofrequency, or optical techniques. The outcoupling rate governs the flux and properties of the emitted beam.
