Otologist

An otologist is a physician who specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the ear, including the auditory and vestibular systems. In many healthcare systems, otology is a subspecialty of otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat surgery), and an otologist may work alongside audiologists, vestibular therapists, and other specialists. Otologists address both adult and pediatric patients, with some practitioners focusing more on one age group.

Training and qualifications typically involve earning a medical degree, completing a residency in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery, and often pursuing a further fellowship in otology or neurotology. Certification and subspecialty credentials vary by country. The role frequently includes both non-surgical management and surgical interventions for ear-related conditions.

Common conditions managed by an otologist include hearing loss (conductive or sensorineural), chronic or recurrent ear infections, ear canal problems, tinnitus, vertigo and balance disorders, Meniere’s disease, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, and tympanic membrane perforations. Diagnostic methods include audiometry, tympanometry, imaging studies such as CT or MRI, and various vestibular tests to assess balance function. Surgical procedures commonly performed by otologists include tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy, stapedectomy or cochlear implantation, placement of ear tubes, and repair of the tympanic membrane, among others.

Otology is often practiced within broader ENT clinics or dedicated centers, and the management plan may involve lifelong ear care, rehabilitation, and follow-up. When necessary, otologists coordinate care with related specialists to address complex conditions affecting hearing and balance.
