Ostusõltuvus, also known as compulsive buying disorder or oniomania, is a behavioral addiction characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with and excessive spending on shopping. Individuals suffering from this condition experience an irresistible urge to buy, often accumulating items they do not need or cannot afford. This behavior is typically driven by an emotional need, such as relieving stress, anxiety, or boredom, rather than the actual utility of the purchased goods.

The cycle of compulsive buying often involves a build-up of tension leading to the purchase, followed by a temporary feeling of euphoria or relief. However, this is usually short-lived, giving way to feelings of guilt, shame, and financial distress. The consequences can be severe, impacting personal relationships, leading to significant debt, and contributing to mental health issues like depression and anxiety.

Diagnosing ostusõltuvus involves assessing the frequency and intensity of the shopping behavior, the inability to control it, and the negative consequences it brings.
