The term originates from the German phrase *Ostuexperiment*, which translates to "open door experiment," emphasizing the lack of artificial barriers between the researcher and the environment being studied.

These experiments aim to observe behavior in its most authentic form, minimizing the influence of the observer effect, where participants alter their behavior due to awareness of being studied. Ostueksperimente are commonly used in fields such as sociology, anthropology, and behavioral psychology to gather unbiased data on social interactions, workplace dynamics, or public behavior. For example, researchers might observe interactions in a café, office, or public square without participants knowing they are part of a study.

A key characteristic of ostueksperimente is the ethical consideration of informed consent.
