Osittaisvaraus, often translated as partial charge, is a concept used in chemistry to describe the uneven distribution of electron density within a molecule. When two atoms with different electronegativities form a covalent bond, the electrons in the bond are not shared equally. The more electronegative atom attracts the bonding electrons more strongly, resulting in a partial negative charge on that atom, denoted by the symbol δ-. Conversely, the less electronegative atom will have a partial positive charge, denoted by the symbol δ+.
