Osittaissähkövarauksia is a term that does not have a widely standardized definition in official Finnish energy regulation; in industry discussions it may refer to the partial reservation of electrical capacity by a market participant for a defined period. In practice, a customer or operator can secure a fixed, reserved quantity of power that is guaranteed to be available during the agreed hours, while the remaining capacity is traded under ordinary market terms. The concept appears in industry discussions and pilot projects as a way to combine reliability with flexibility.

How it works: The reservation is defined by the quantity, time window, and conditions (pricing, metering, and settlement). The reserved portion may receive priority on supply or be exempt from certain demand-response events; the unreserved portion remains subject to normal day-ahead or intraday markets and balancing obligations. Metering separates the two streams; settlements allocate costs and consumption between reserved and unreserved parts.

Use cases: Large industrial plants, data centers, or critical infrastructure seeking guaranteed supply during peak periods; service providers experimenting with demand-side management; capacity markets or grid balancing schemes where flexibility is monetized via reserved vs. non-reserved rights.

Benefits and challenges: Benefits include greater reliability for critical loads and predictable costs; challenges include regulatory alignment, complexity of contracts, risk of underutilization or stranded capacity, and the need for precise measurement and settlement.
