Organicinorganic

Organicinorganic is a broad term used to describe materials and compounds that combine organic and inorganic components in a single entity. The label encompasses a range of systems that lie at the interface of organic and inorganic chemistry, including metal-organic frameworks, coordination polymers, inorganic-organic hybrids, and certain perovskite materials. It is intentionally inclusive and distinct from strictly organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, or classical organometallic compounds that feature metal–carbon bonds.

In organicinorganic systems, the inorganic portion often supplies metal centers, inorganic clusters, or solid-state matrices, while the organic portion provides ligands, functional groups, or spacers that impart solubility, porosity, reactivity, or optical properties. This modularity enables fine-tuning of properties such as porosity and surface chemistry, electronic structure, and catalytic activity. Synthesis commonly relies on wet-chemical routes, hydrothermal or solvothermal methods, self-assembly, or templating strategies.

Representative classes include metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which feature metal nodes connected by organic linkers to form extended networks; inorganic-organic hybrids such as organosilicas and other functionalized oxides; and hybrid perovskites, where an inorganic framework accommodates an organic cation. While MOFs and many organometallic complexes are well known, the field also embraces materials where the inorganic and organic parts are integrated into a single functional material rather than a discrete molecule.

Applications span catalysis, energy storage and conversion (for example, in batteries, supercapacitors, and solar cells), adsorption and separation, sensing, and optoelectronics. Challenges include stability under operating conditions, toxicity (notably in lead-containing perovskites), and scalable, cost-effective synthesis. The term remains a practical descriptor rather than a strict category, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of synthesis and characterization at the organic–inorganic boundary.
