Ordinalldata is a term used to refer to data that consists of ordered categories (ordinal variables) where the order of categories conveys information about relative magnitude, but the exact differences between adjacent categories are not assumed to be equal or known. It sits between nominal data, which has no intrinsic order, and interval/ratio data, which assume equal intervals.

Common sources include survey responses on Likert scales (strongly disagree to strongly agree), education levels (high school, bachelor's, master's), income brackets, and ranking data. Ordinal data are typically coded with integers or labels that preserve the natural order, but analysts should avoid assuming that the intervals between categories are equal.

In practice, ordinal data are subject to missing values and ties, and may require careful preprocessing. Descriptive analysis often emphasizes medians and modes, with dispersion measured by the interquartile range. Inferential methods for ordinal data include nonparametric tests such as the Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon signed-rank, and Kruskal-Wallis tests; correlation measures like Spearman's rho and Kendall's tau; and regression approaches such as ordinal logistic regression (proportional odds models) and adjacent-category models. Some analyses treat ordinal data as interval data if justified by the data or design, but this assumption can bias results if the intervals are not truly equal.
