Optælling

Optælling, from op- “up” and tælle “to count,” is the process of determining a total by counting individual items or units. It is used to derive exact numbers in a variety of contexts, including statistics, inventory management, epidemiology, and elections.

In elections, optælling refers to the official counting of ballots to determine the result. The process typically involves collecting ballots, ensuring eligibility, separating valid from invalid ballots, and tallying votes for candidates or parties. Counts may be performed at polling stations or at central counting centers, and may be manual or supported by scanning or other technology. After counting, results are recorded, reported, and may be subject to audits, recounts, or legal challenges to ensure accuracy and transparency.

In statistics and social science, optælling can mean tallying counts of categorical variables or enumerating occurrences in a dataset. It is often an initial data processing step, followed by aggregation and statistical analysis. In inventory and logistics, optælling is the stocktake: counting items in stock to determine inventory levels, discrepancies, or to reconcile with records.
