Oppføre

Oppføre is a Norwegian verb with several related senses. It most commonly means to perform or stage something, such as a play, concert, or other production, as in å oppføre et skuespill. It can also mean å oppføre et hus or other structure, i.e., to erect or build. In reflexive use, oppføre seg means to behave oneself, with oppførsel describing general conduct.

Etymology and usage notes: The verb is formed with the prefix opp- paired with fø re (to lead, bear), giving senses of bringing forth, presenting, or constructing. It is used in both Bokmål and Nynorsk with essentially the same core meanings. Intransitive reflexive use is common for behavior, while non-reflexive use covers staging and construction.

Grammar and forms: Infinitive å oppføre. Present tense oppfører. Preterite oppførte. Past participle oppført. Passive constructions can be formed with bli eller vært + oppført, or by using a passive form such as forestått through context. The reflexive form oppføre seg governs behavior descriptions: å oppføre seg bra, å oppføre seg dårlig.
