Opintoohjausta

Opintoohjausta, often referred to as opinto-ohjaus, is a Finnish term for study guidance. It encompasses counseling and information services provided within schools and educational institutions to support students in planning their education and career paths. The aim is to help learners understand their interests, strengths, and values, explore different study routes, and make informed decisions about transitions from basic education to upper secondary education, vocational training, or higher education and subsequently to work life.

Guidance is delivered through individual sessions, group workshops, and classroom lessons. It provides information on available study options, admissions practices, and prerequisites, as well as guidance on study skills, time management, and motivation. It also covers welfare resources, financial matters that relate to education, and options for students with special educational needs. The guidance often includes the creation of an individual study plan or guidance plan, which is reviewed periodically in collaboration with the student and, when appropriate, with parents or guardians.

Organization and personnel: In Finland, opintoohjausta is part of the national core curriculum and is typically organized by schools with the involvement of teachers and dedicated opinto-ohjaajat (guidance counselors), sometimes alongside school psychologists or other support staff. Guidance services are available throughout compulsory education and are designed to support seamless transitions to upper secondary and higher education, as well as to the labor market.
