Operatsioonisüsteem is the Estonian term for operating system. An operating system is a fundamental software that manages computer hardware and software resources, and provides common services for computer programs. It acts as an intermediary between the user and the computer's hardware.

The user interface allows users to interact with the computer, which can be a graphical user interface (GUI) or a command-line interface (CLI).

Common examples of operating systems include Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Each operating system has its own unique architecture and set of features, catering to different user needs and hardware platforms. Operating systems are essential for the functioning of virtually all modern computing devices, from personal computers and smartphones to servers and embedded systems. Their development and evolution have been crucial to the advancement of computing technology.
