OpenJFX

OpenJFX is the open-source project that provides the JavaFX GUI toolkit for Java. It includes a mature set of APIs and a runtime for building rich desktop and embedded user interfaces in Java. JavaFX began as part of the Java platform and was later released as an open-source project to be maintained by the JavaFX community and Oracle. Since 2018, Oracle has moved JavaFX into the OpenJFX project, making it a community-driven effort with contributions from multiple organizations.

OpenJFX is released separately from the JDK, and the code is licensed under GPL v2 with Classpath Exception (with some components under related licenses). OpenJFX builds are available on the project's site and via Maven Central, and they can be used with Oracle JDK, OpenJDK, and other Java runtimes.

The OpenJFX architecture centers on a modular scene graph and a set of UI libraries. Core modules include javafx.graphics (scene graph rendering and effects), javafx.controls (standard UI controls), and javafx.base (fundamental APIs). Additional modules cover FXML-based UI design (javafx.fxml), Web content display (javafx.web), media playback (javafx.media), 2D/3D graphics, CSS styling, and Swing interoperability.

OpenJFX is maintained through community contributions, with a governance model that involves project maintainers and a steering/community-driven process. Releases are coordinated with the Java platform to provide up-to-date functionality and platform support. It is widely used for cross-platform desktop applications that require a modern UI with CSS styling and hardware-accelerated rendering.
