It contrasts with offline data, which is collected without an internet connection. Onlinedata typically comprises behavioral data (navigation paths, time on page, search queries), transactional data (purchases, payments), content data (posts, reviews, comments), and contextual data (device type, geolocation, network information). It may also include inferred profiles such as interests or demographics.

It is gathered through multiple mechanisms, including cookies, tracking pixels, server logs, application telemetry, SDKs in mobile apps, APIs, and, in some cases, web scraping. Much onlinedata is stored in data warehouses or data lakes and processed for analytics, personalization, forecasting, or machine learning.
