Onkogeneja

Onkogeneja is a term derived from the Greek words "onkos" meaning mass or tumor, and "genesis" meaning origin. It refers to the genetic alteration or activation of proto-oncogenes, which are normal cellular genes that play a role in cell growth, division, and differentiation. When a proto-oncogene undergoes mutation or is abnormally expressed, it can become an oncogene. Oncogenes have the potential to drive uncontrolled cell proliferation, a hallmark of cancer.

These alterations can occur through various mechanisms, including point mutations, chromosomal translocations, gene amplification, or insertion of viral genetic material. For example, a point mutation might alter the protein product of a proto-oncogene, leading to a permanently active signaling pathway that promotes cell division. Chromosomal translocations can place a proto-oncogene under the control of a strong promoter, causing its overproduction.

The presence and activity of oncogenes are key factors in the development and progression of many cancers. They essentially act as a "gas pedal" for cell growth, overriding normal regulatory mechanisms that would otherwise prevent uncontrolled proliferation. Research into oncogenes has been crucial for understanding cancer biology and has led to the development of targeted therapies that aim to inhibit the activity of specific oncogenes or their downstream signaling pathways. Identifying the oncogenic drivers in a particular tumor is often essential for determining the most effective treatment strategy.
