Onkogeneja
Onkogeneja is a term derived from the Greek words "onkos" meaning mass or tumor, and "genesis" meaning origin. It refers to the genetic alteration or activation of proto-oncogenes, which are normal cellular genes that play a role in cell growth, division, and differentiation. When a proto-oncogene undergoes mutation or is abnormally expressed, it can become an oncogene. Oncogenes have the potential to drive uncontrolled cell proliferation, a hallmark of cancer.
These alterations can occur through various mechanisms, including point mutations, chromosomal translocations, gene amplification, or insertion
The presence and activity of oncogenes are key factors in the development and progression of many cancers.
