Omanis

Omanis refers to the citizens of the Sultanate of Oman or people of Omani descent. Oman is located on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, and its citizen population forms the core of the national community while a large expatriate workforce resides in the country.

Most Omanis are of Arab heritage, but the population also includes minority communities such as Baluchis, Swahilis, and other groups connected to Oman’s historic trade networks along the coast and inland. Arabic is the official language, with Omani Arabic spoken at home and in daily life; English is widely used in business and government, especially in urban areas.

Social life in Oman has traditionally centered on family and tribal affiliations, though urbanization and modernization have altered some patterns. Islam is the predominant faith among Omanis, with Ibadi Islam being the historic majority branch. There are Sunni and Shia minorities as well, and the state promotes religious tolerance within the framework of Ibadi norms.

Culturally, Omanis are known for hospitality and distinctive dress, including the white dishdasha and the kumma cap or turban for men. The khanjar dagger is a national symbol, reflecting a maritime and desert heritage. Cultural expressions also include traditional music and dance, such as the Razha, and a long history of seafaring, trade, and frankincense production.

Citizenship in Oman is governed by law; it is primarily inherited, with naturalization being rare and dual citizenship generally limited. The government has pursued policies to increase Omani participation in the economy, particularly in the private sector.
