Olumo

Olumo Rock is a prominent rock formation in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State in southwestern Nigeria. Rising about 137 meters above the surrounding terrain, the granite outcrop dominates the city skyline and contains a network of caves that were historically used as shelter and storage.

Historically, Olumo Rock has been central to the Egba people. During inter-tribal conflicts in the 19th century, it served as a fortress and refuge for warriors and refugees. Caves within the rock were used as living quarters and supply depots, and a shrine on the site reflects its spiritual importance to the Egba rulers and communities.

Today, Olumo Rock is a major cultural and tourist site. The Olumo Rock Tourist Center provides access to the summit via stairways and paths, with a viewing platform at the top that affords views over Abeokuta and the Ogun River valley. A small museum and cultural displays present the history of the rock and the Egba people.

Preservation and management are the responsibilities of local authorities, with involvement from cultural groups and state agencies. Conservation work aims to protect the caves and rock face while accommodating visitors and maintaining the site's historical significance.
