Olecranonbursa

The olecranon bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac located at the tip of the elbow. Its primary function is to reduce friction between the skin and the underlying bone, the olecranon process of the ulna. This bursa, along with other bursae around the elbow, acts as a cushion, allowing for smooth movement of the joint.

Inflammation of the olecranon bursa is known as olecranon bursitis. This condition is often caused by direct trauma, such as a fall directly onto the elbow. Repeated pressure or friction on the elbow, common in occupations or activities requiring prolonged kneeling or leaning on the elbows, can also lead to bursitis. Infection within the bursa, though less common, can also occur, especially if there is a break in the skin.

Symptoms of olecranon bursitis typically include swelling at the tip of the elbow, which can sometimes be significant and resemble a goose egg. Pain, tenderness, and warmth in the affected area are also common. In cases of infection, fever and redness of the skin over the bursa may be present.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination and assessment of the patient's history. In some cases, aspiration of the bursa fluid may be performed to rule out infection or to relieve pressure. Treatment for olecranon bursitis depends on the cause. For non-infectious bursitis, rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) are often recommended. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help manage pain and inflammation. If infection is present, antibiotics are necessary, and the bursa may need to be drained. Chronic or severe cases might require surgical intervention.
