Oillite

Oillite is a trade name for a type of oil-impregnated porous bearing material, typically a bronze alloy. The material is manufactured by forming a bronze alloy into bearings and creating a network of interconnected pores, which are subsequently impregnated with lubricating oil. The result is a self-lubricating bearing suitable for use in a range of mechanical assemblies.

The porous structure stores lubricant and allows it to diffuse to the bearing surface during operation, reducing friction and wear. Oillite bearings are favored for low- to moderate-speed applications and for assemblies where regular lubrication is difficult or impractical. They are commonly used as bushings or sleeves in automotive, industrial, and consumer equipment.

Limitations include reduced performance at high loads or high speeds, and oil loss over time, which requires re-impregnation or replacement. Temperature and contaminant exposure can also affect lubrication efficiency. Some grades may include additional solid lubricants to improve performance under demanding conditions.

Common applications include power tools, pumps, farm machinery, electrical equipment, and various machinery bushings and sleeves. Oillite provides a maintenance-friendly alternative to oil-lubricated bearings in suitable service conditions, combining metallic strength with self-lubrication.
