Ohjauslajit

Ohjauslajit, often translated as "guidance sports" or "control sports," is a general term in Finnish for a category of sports that involve navigating a course using a map and compass. These sports emphasize mental skills, decision-making, and physical endurance as participants strive to find control points in a specific order within a given terrain.

The most well-known and prominent of these sports is orienteering. In orienteering, participants are given a detailed map and a series of control points marked on it. They must then use their map-reading and compass skills to locate these points in the correct sequence, typically as quickly as possible. The terrain can vary widely, from forests and mountains to urban environments.

Other sports that fall under the umbrella of ohjauslajit share similar principles. These might include ski orienteering, where navigation is done on skis, or even adventure racing, which can incorporate navigational challenges as part of a larger multi-disciplinary event. The core requirement across all these disciplines is the ability to interpret a map, use a compass effectively, and make strategic choices about the best route to take, often under time pressure.
