Ocularists

An ocularist is a professional who fabricates, fits, and maintains ocular prostheses for individuals who have lost an eye due to trauma, disease, or congenital absence. The field combines medical knowledge with artistry to create a prosthetic eye that fits comfortably in the eye socket and closely matches the appearance of the remaining eye. Ocularists often work in hospitals, eye clinics, or private practices, collaborating with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and nurses.

Training and certification for ocularists varies by region. Many learn through apprenticeship or formal programs that cover ocular anatomy, socket assessment, impression taking, prosthesis fabrication, painting and shading of the sclera and iris, sterilization, and patient care. Some jurisdictions require licensure or formal certification to practice.

Procedures and scope of work typically include evaluating the socket, taking impressions to guide a custom shell, painting the iris and scleral vessels to match the patient’s eye, and assembling a durable prosthesis made from medical-grade acrylic or other materials. The prosthesis is then fitted, with adjustments made for comfort and symmetry. Patients receive instructions on cleaning and care, and follow-up visits address fit, wear, and any changes in the socket. Ocularists may also guide rehabilitation and address cosmetic concerns to help patients regain confidence and a natural appearance.

The intent of an ocular prosthesis is to restore a natural look and protect the eye socket. While it cannot restore true eye movement, a well-made prosthesis can significantly improve facial symmetry and comfort.
