Obratli

Obratli is a common name used in several South Slavic languages to refer to a group of small freshwater fish that are typically bottom-dwellers. The term is applied across regions such as Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia, where it denotes several related species rather than a single taxon.

Taxonomy and identification

Obratli does not designate one species; rather it encompasses multiple species of small benthic fishes, often loach-like, within families such as Cobitidae and Nemacheilidae. Regional usage can vary, and the label may be applied to different locally common species that share similar body plans and lifestyles. Because the name covers more than one taxon, precise identification usually requires species-level names or regional references.

Appearance and ecology

Species referred to as obratli generally have slender bodies, barbels around the mouth, and adaptations that facilitate foraging along the substrate of rivers and streams. They inhabit clear, well-oxygenated waters with substrates of gravel, rubble, or vegetation.
