Objektiorientoituneisuus, or object-oriented programming (OOP), is a programming paradigm centered around the concept of "objects," which can be thought of as instances of classes. These classes serve as blueprints for creating objects, encapsulating data and behavior in a single unit. The primary principles of OOP include encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism.

Encapsulation involves bundling the data (attributes) and methods (functions) that operate on the data into a single unit, or class. This helps in hiding the internal state of the object and only exposing a controlled interface. Access to the data is typically restricted to methods within the class, promoting data integrity and security.

Inheritance is a mechanism by which a new class can inherit properties and behaviors (methods) from an existing class. This allows for code reuse and the creation of hierarchical relationships between classes. A subclass can extend or modify the behavior of its superclass, enabling the development of more specialized classes.

Polymorphism allows objects of different classes to be treated as objects of a common superclass. This is achieved through method overriding, where a subclass provides a specific implementation of a method that is already defined in its superclass. Polymorphism enables more flexible and generic code, as the same method call can behave differently depending on the object it is invoked on.

OOP is widely used in various programming languages, including Java, C++, and Python, and is particularly well-suited for large-scale software development projects. It promotes modularity, making it easier to manage and maintain code, and enhances code reusability and extensibility.
