Névkiválasztás

Névkiválasztás refers to the process of choosing a name, most commonly a given name, for a child in Hungarian culture. This decision is a significant one for parents, often involving a blend of tradition, personal preference, and sometimes practical considerations.

Historically, names were often passed down through family lines, with the firstborn son typically named after the paternal grandfather and the firstborn daughter after the maternal grandmother. This practice, while still present, has become less rigid. Many parents now opt for names that are currently popular, names that hold special meaning to them, or names that sound appealing.

The legal framework in Hungary also plays a role in névkiválasztás. While parents have considerable freedom, there are certain restrictions. Names must be clearly identifiable as male or female, and generally, names not already present in common usage or established Hungarian naming traditions may require special approval. The birth registration process formally records the chosen name.

The selection process can sometimes be a source of discussion and compromise between parents, with differing tastes and family expectations to navigate.
