Näytönpäivitys, also known as screen refresh rate, refers to the number of times per second a display refreshes its image. It is measured in Hertz (Hz), where 1 Hz equals one refresh per second. A higher refresh rate means the screen updates more frequently, resulting in smoother motion and a more fluid visual experience.

For example, a display with a 60 Hz refresh rate updates the image 60 times every second. A display with a 120 Hz refresh rate updates twice as often, 120 times per second. This difference is particularly noticeable in fast-paced content such as video games, sports broadcasts, and scrolling through web pages. In gaming, a higher refresh rate can provide a competitive advantage by reducing motion blur and allowing for quicker reaction times.

The typical refresh rates for displays have increased over time. Older monitors often had refresh rates of 60 Hz or 75 Hz. Modern displays, especially those designed for gaming or professional use, commonly offer refresh rates of 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or even higher, such as 240 Hz. The actual perceived smoothness also depends on the frame rate of the content being displayed, which is the number of frames per second generated by the source. For optimal performance, the display's refresh rate should ideally match or be a multiple of the content's frame rate.
