The category of a network cable, denoted by Cat, indicates its performance and capabilities. Common categories include Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6a, and Cat 7, each offering progressively higher data transfer speeds and bandwidth. For instance, Cat 5e supports speeds up to 1 Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps), while Cat 6 and Cat 6a can handle 10 Gbps over shorter distances. Cat 7 is designed for even higher frequencies and data rates.

Each network cable has standardized connectors, typically RJ45 (Registered Jack 45), which are plugged into corresponding ports on network devices. The physical construction and shielding of these cables play a crucial role in their reliability and the integrity of the data transmitted. Different environments may require specific cable types, such as shielded twisted-pair (STP) cables in areas with high electromagnetic interference, compared to unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cables, which are more common. Proper installation and cable management are important for maintaining network performance and longevity.
