Näppäimistötilat

Näppäimistötilat, often translated as "keyboard modes" or "keyboard states," refers to the different functional configurations a keyboard can adopt. These modes allow a single physical keyboard to perform a wider range of functions than its basic layout might suggest. The most common näppäimistötilat include the standard alphanumeric mode, where keys produce letters, numbers, and symbols. Another crucial mode is the function key mode, accessed through a dedicated Fn key or similar mechanism, which activates secondary functions often found on the F1-F12 keys. These secondary functions can control screen brightness, volume, media playback, or act as system-specific shortcuts.

Numpad mode, for keyboards with a dedicated numeric keypad, allows the keys to function as a calculator-style input for numbers and arithmetic operations. When Num Lock is activated, the numpad functions as intended. When deactivated, these keys often revert to navigation commands like arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down. Some specialized keyboards or software introduce even more complex näppäimistötilat, such as gaming modes that disable certain keys (like the Windows key) to prevent accidental interruptions during gameplay, or macro modes that allow users to assign custom sequences of keystrokes to a single key.
