Näppislukko

Näppislukko, also known as Caps Lock, is a modifier key on computer keyboards. When activated, it causes all alphabetic characters to be typed in uppercase. Pressing the key again deactivates the Caps Lock, returning the keyboard to its standard lowercase typing mode. The key is typically located on the left side of the keyboard, above the Shift key.

The function of Caps Lock was originally intended to be a simpler way to type in all caps for extended periods without needing to hold down the Shift key for every letter. This was particularly useful for typewriters, where the Shift key also moved the carriage. On early computers, the Caps Lock key had a similar utility.

In modern computing, the practical use of Caps Lock has diminished for many users. Typing in all caps is often perceived as shouting or being aggressive in online communication. Consequently, the key is sometimes repurposed by users to perform other functions, such as a shortcut for specific actions or as part of a custom keyboard layout. Many operating systems offer options to remap or disable the Caps Lock key. A small indicator light on the keyboard usually shows when Caps Lock is active.
